Bryan Cowe

Design leader, product thinker, cross-functional builder.

A career spent understanding and elevating systems across Design, Product, and Technology. Never attached to a specific title: attached to building things well.

Approach

Great design doesn't happen by accident - it happens because someone built the conditions for it.

My approach is rooted in systems thinking: not only designing the product, but designing the process, the feedback loops, the contribution standards, and the team culture that keeps quality consistent over time. I work best at the intersection of strategy and execution, where I can hold the thread across research, craft, engineering, and stakeholder reality simultaneously.

A few principles that shape how that works in practice:

  • Make it legible - Complexity is often unavoidable, but confusion never is. I push for clarity in every layer: the interface, the spec, the rationale, and the conversation.
  • Build with, not for - The best outcomes I've shipped came from genuine cross-functional partnership. Engineering, product, analytics, and research aren't handoff recipients; they're co-authors.
  • Ops is how design shows up consistently - Rituals, contribution standards, async feedback systems, and governance aren't overhead. They're the infrastructure that lets a team truly do its best work, consistently and at scale.
  • Mentor towards empowered ownership - I measure my effectiveness as a leader partly by how confidently my team drives and justifies their own decisions without me in the room. Safety, stretch, and high standards aren't in tension.
  • Stay hands-on - I prototype, synthesize research, annotate interactions, and get deeper into the screens, files, and docs so that I can better zoom out; for both my team and better cross-functional collaboration. Leadership doesn't always have to mean distance from the craft.
  • Embrace the machine, own the thinking - Generative AI has real leverage in calculated phases: rapid exploration, design teams speaking in code earlier, and pattern synthesis across large datasets. I use it where it can truly compress time and sharpen thinking. Every output still has to clear the same bar - LLMs/Code Assistants just change how quickly I get to tuning key details.

About

I design and direct digital and physical products, build systems, lead teams, and establish DesignOps practices.

I've spent 20+ years studying systems and process across disciplines, and enhancing them: sometimes as a designer, sometimes a leader, sometimes a fabricator, a set designer, or a front-end developer.

The through-lines are curiosity, craft, and care.

Across my career I've partnered with great brands and collaborators including Lexus, Toyota, Warner Bros., Hulu, Mattel, The Broad Museum, Informa Markets Fashion, Audrey Kawasaki, Tristan Eaton, Drew Struzan, The Rentals, and more. Creating tools, sites, merchandise, sculpture, and interfaces that blend utility with intentional detail.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, and now call Amsterdam, NL home. Forever inspired by grid-based design, inclusive systems, wabi-sabi, analog synths, black coffee, good headphones, petrichor, and countless other concepts. When I'm not designing, I'm traveling, shooting photos, playing music, talking to animals, or spending hours in a bookstore.

Work I'm open to:

  • Leadership that shapes process, not just pixels
  • Teams that value systems thinking, open communication, and mentorship
  • Hybrid in NL or Global/EU remote
